We had the first snow of the season this weekend and my four year old exclaimed “Now it’s really Christmas time!”After going out to play in the snow with her dad, we faced an entire afternoon with nothing to do, and no desire to go back outside. I really like to cook, but don’t do much during the week (I have the great fortune of having a husband who is an excellent cook). However, on days like this I often end up in the kitchen cooking up a child-friendly dish, or two. It’s a great activity for spending time together, learning about measurements, and learning a basic skill — although it usually ends with a treat that I shouldn’t eat.

This weekend was no different. We started by making butter from a recipe I saw in the NY Times. I learned that butter is amazingly easy to make, and am now planning to make a bunch of flavored butters over the next few weeks. It is also costs a bit less to make it yourself, and tastes much better than store bought butter. Then we made a small batch of gingerbread cookies to launch the holiday season. My teenagers LOVED the butter and ate toast instead of dinner that night, while my four year old had a chance to get creative decorating the cookies.

Overall, it was a nice way to hang together, and relax before jumping into the work week.
